The shape and projection of the ears are inherited traits. Protruding ears or ‘bat ears’ as they are unkindly referred to are relatively common. In some cases, the prominence may be very mild and not a concern to the individual. However, in other adults and children the problem is associated with being teased, especially at school, with a profound detrimental effect on self-confidence and self-esteem. This lack of self-confidence can continue into adulthood and individuals may also find that in their attempt to hide their ears, they are restricted by the hairstyles they can choose. It is often common for one ear to be more prominent than the other.

Ear re-shaping surgery, otherwise known as ‘Bat ear correction’ or technically known as Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty can effectively treat:

  • Prominent ears of varying degrees on one or both sides, due to incomplete folding of the ear cartilage.
  • Previous unsatisfactory ear surgery results

In suitable child candidates safety is mandatory. The ears will have grown very close to their final size by approximately the age of 5 years and ear correction surgery is therefore carried out from this age. Alternatively, the procedure can be successfully undertaken in adulthood, as there is no upper age limit for otoplasty surgery.
