Male Breast Surgery (Gynaecomastia)

All men have some breast tissue. However, man breast development / enlargement / “man boobs”, referred to as Gynaecomastia in medical circles, is a relatively common condition that can affect men of any age and there are a variety of possible causal factors that can be behind it, including:

  • Excessive weight gain or loss
  • Use of certain drugs, for example steroids or hormones
  • Hereditary factors
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Fatty benign growths or tumours

The condition may affect one breast (unilateral) or both (bilateral) in varying degrees ranging from mild to severe. There may be excessive fat distribution, excessive glandular (breast) tissue development or a combination of both.

It can be a source of embarrassment and impaired self-confidence, and may have a detrimental effect on quality of life as many men avoid certain sports, sunbathing on holiday and, in some cases, intimacy in order to conceal their condition. There is a variety of different forms of Gynecomastia treatment, the choice of which depends upon the size of the breasts, the ratio of fat to glandular tissue present and the extent of breast sagging present. If a causative factor is found, then this should be addressed prior to male breast reduction surgery, e.g. stopping or adjusting the dosage of drugs or medication that is associated with increased male breast growth. Any excess weight should also initially be lost by following an individually tailored exercise and diet programme.

Liposuction may be required in cases where there is mainly fatty tissue enlargement of the breast. This involves sucking out the excess fat through a small tube inserted via a 3-5mm incision. In cases where there is more glandular tissue present, direct open surgical excision may be warranted. In addition, surgical excision can be carried out in combination with liposuction in suitable candidates, in order to achieve a flatter, more aesthetic chest contour.
