Lipostructure Fat Grafting

As we age, skin elasticity in the face is gradually reduced and lines and wrinkles appear. Fatty deposits in the face are reduced or displaced, and as a result, the cheeks can lose volume and plumpness and flatten, giving rise to a tired appearance, especially under the eyes. In addition, the lips lose volume and become thinner.

Fat Transfer, otherwise known as fat grafting, fat injections or lipotransfer, is a procedure that has increased in popularity over recent years. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as face lifting to restore facial volume and fullness, and improve body contour deformities. It involves removal of fat from one part of the body such as the tummy or thighs, processing it and carefully re-injecting it in another part, commonly the face.

The procedure has been used for both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery purposes for many years. However, pioneering work carried out by Dr Sydney Coleman in New York helped refine the technique and outcomes have become more predictable. Previously the survival rate of transferred fatty tissue was low due to inadequate blood supply to cells at the centre of the large fatty segments that were harvested. Following Dr Coleman’s work, the fat grafting technique has evolved so that very small amounts of fat are removed and placed in individual tunnels, with layers gradually built up, allowing improved blood vessel growth around each fat cell, an increased blood supply and a better tissue survival rate.
